The Holy Ghost Service: A Primer

The Holy Ghost Service: What It Is
The Holy Ghost Service is the RCCG’s signature service. The flagship service holds the first Friday at the Redemption Camp near Lagos, Nigeria. Between 800,000 and 1.2 million worshipers attend the service. Word of knowledge, prayers, miracles, praise and worship, and anointed ministrations are common features of the service.

Holy Ghost Service: In the Beginning
On the occasion of Pastor Adeboye’s birthday in 1986, he’d requested a special birthday gift from God and asked a miracle for each member. God instructed him to announce and invite members to a special meeting called the “Holy Ghost Service.” This marked the beginning of what has become a miracle-filled monthly service.

In 1996, the first variant of the Holy Ghost Service came into being. Pastor Adeboye was in the midst of prayer for one of the Holy Ghost services when he saw a vision to start the Special Holy Ghost also called Festival of Life (FOL) in the United Kingdom. The first London FOL was held in April 1996.

It wasn’t until 2001 that the Holy Ghost service came to North America. Services were held in cities such as Houston, Toronto, Detroit, Chicago, and Atlanta, to mention a few.

Difference between the “Holy Ghost” and the “Special Holy Ghost” Services
Whenever the Holy Ghost service is hosted outside its primary location in Lagos, Nigeria, it’s called the “Special Holy Ghost Service”. This is why our June service is the “Special Holy Ghost Service.” Additionally, Special Holy Ghost services allow for flexible timing whereas the Holy Ghost service is usually an all-night event.
